Raison D'Etre
At The Canberra Writing School we recognize that individuals need to develop strong communication skills, skills which are essential to live, survive and especially to thrive in our global community today, probably moreso than ever before.
Whilst we recognize that ALL communication skills are important, we believe that the written word is often longer lasting, usually stored over time and often records and even changes history. The empowerment of developing effective writing skills we believe is life changing.
Our mission is to equip as many people as we can, with improved written communication skills.
We recognize that learning to write is a process. We also know that each individual, at any given point in time, is at a different stage of development within this process. In other words, people are at different stages according to their history and unique personal journey.
The Canberra Writing School offers appropriate courses to students who wish to develop their writing skills, no matter what stage of development they may have reached when they first enrol.
Are You A Talented Writer?
We are particularly keen to identify and develop writing talent, in those writers who recognize this in themselves. Or indeed for whom others have identified that they may possess talent, and are motivated to do something to improve and enhance their writing skills accordingly.
The Canberra Writing School will offer courses which will change and enhance the quality of peoples' everyday lives, by improving their written communication skills. The Canberra Writing School is for everyone who wants to write well and to communicate effectively with other people in the written vernacular. Our slogan is threefold:
"Be Inspired!"
meaning that we want all of our students to be inspired to express themselves in writing,
"Be Equipped!"
meaning that in order to get your message across you need to have the correct knowhow/tools to do so, whatever the genre or purpose may be!
"Be A Writer!"
meaning that you can be effective once you have the knowhow and the inspiration to communicate your thoughts and feelings as they may occur.
In short, YOU can be a writer and we'll help you do it.
How Does It Work?
The Canberra Writing School will run on two strands:
Equipping The Writer In You.
Under the first strand, we will run writing courses from time to time for various ages and stages, which will cater to equipping the writer with the necessary tools of writing. Such courses are to do with style, grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, specific purpose or genre writing, etc. In other words, all that encompasses the technical skills necessary to improve one's style, as a writer.
Inspiring The Writer In You.
The second strand is the strand where writers are fed the inspiration to write. In other words, we will run courses on all manner of interesting subjects, which are designed to "feed the minds of the writers" who come here to be inspired.
Classes
Initially, classes will be held in various locations, in order to maximise the opportunity for as many people as possible.
Class sizes will be restricted to a maximum of 15 to ensure optimal learning conditions.
As we grow, we intend to offer online classes and correspondence courses to be launched in 2009.
Teachers
We are exceedingly fortunate in the ACT, as we are living in a thriving, richly educated population of talented writers and teachers of writing. So much so, that we are currently sifting through a number of high standard applications to teach with us, and we will be in the position to be able to choose the very best to offer the most interesting courses here. Our aim is to offer the highest standards and from the outset earn a reputation for running writing courses of the highest calibre.
What To Do To Register Your Interest
We are currently gathering courses together under both of these strands and will offer them to the public from time to time. As mentioned above, we are fortunate in having the best teachers available to us in a number of most interesting courses to choose from. You can find a listing of the courses currently on offer in the COURSES section of this website. Please go to this section to register your interest in a particular course we may have proposed, or to request/suggest a course you'd like to see us run.
You will be placed on our mailing list and you will be contacted when your chosen course is offered. Feel free to register for as many courses as you'd like. This puts you under no obligation, just gives us an indication of which courses are mostly in demand.
